Bandwidth Frequently Asked Questions

You may be experiencing slow Internet and are wondering why.

The most likely reason is bandwidth. Evergreen has a 20 MB connection, and Resnet is allowed up to 15 MB.

When the network traffic is extremely saturated, such as at times when a lot of people come back home from class, you may find some of your programs (that need to connect to the internet) either only work for a little bit and then quit, not open at all, or be really slow. Unfortunately, there isn't too much we can do about this without buying more bandwidth.

Each program type is given a certain priority on our network. HTTP (browsing the web) is the #1 priority, so it should always work (even if it gets slow). Other services that have a higher priority than most are Instant Messaging, Gaming, and other important network protocols such as IMAP and POP (for email). Unfortunately we can't guarantee that these will always work just because they have a higher priority.

Peer to peer applications have the lowest priority and are probably never going to work.

Try using the Internet at times when others are at class, or late at night if there is something very specific you need to get done. If this isn't enough, you can always order your own line from Comcast.
